From 2005: Gardening Tips by past Garden Manager Tony

January Garden Tip: It is a good time to amend the soil. i.e. add organic matter to your soil. Good time to start 'working the soil'. Keep weeding, and weeding, and weeding.
February Garden Tip: Still time to purchase bare root plants; such as: Rhubarb, Raspberries, Artichokes, etc. Continue amending the soil, and keep weeding, and weeding and weeding.
March Garden Tip: Good time to start scouting around for plant seedlings/six-packs.
April Garden Tip: Excellent time to plant those seedlings/six-packs, and ... continue weeding, and weeding, and weeding.
May Garden Tip: There is still plenty of time to plant your garden; Tomatoes, Corn, Spinach, Squash, Lettuce, Radishes, Carrots, etc.
June Garden Tip: As the weather warms up, keep an eye out on your watering practice, by WATERING on a regular basis vs. over-watering.
July Garden Tip: Good Month to pick Santa Rosa Plums. Look for the deep purple color for sweeter fruit.
August Garden Tip: Satsuma Plums are in their prime now. Good time for Picking. Tomatoes, Squash, Beans and Flowers are in abundance. Or, as the verse from the Rock Band song by the "Chili Peppers"---Give it away, give it, give it away now."
September Garden Tip: Get your winter vegetable garden planted as soon as possible. Our warm weather will help your plants develop a deep and healthy root system to carry them thru the cooler months.
October Garden Tip: Another winter garden option is to plant a cover crop of Fava Beans, Bell Beans, etc. All are Nitrogen "Fixing" plants which will enrich your soil.
November Garden Tip: Local Nurseries are selling a variety of Winter Vegetables. Pick up a 6 Pack or two and plant immediately, for better results. Storing Seedlings too long in small containers can stunt their growth. Use Chicken Wire or Bird Netting to protect Seedlings.
December Garden Tip: Remember to amend your soil (add organic matter). Continue to plant your cool season vegetables and don't forget to include cover crops like Bell Beans, Fava Beans, etc. Additional Gardening Notes for Winter:
Continue to Amend your Soil by adding organic compounds (manure, compost, planting mixes, etc.). Add/or Enrich by Planting Nitrogen fixing plants (legumes, bell beans, etc.).
